Hobbs' paintings are the result of taking some common pictorial strategies and mixing them up with a number of principles ubiquitous to the way chaos is conceptualised across a range of academic traditions; mainly science, philosophy and history. These disciplines all illustrate how novelty, contradiction and coexistence, interconnection, continuity, repetition and difference, change, as well as the enduring presence and effect of unseen forces are all part of the everyday, and in fact play a big part in keeping it ticking along.
He doesnt always necessarily represent these principles but instead use them as a generative formula to idiosyncratically test the limits of painting itself, to see what else it might be capable of. Hobbs' practice therefore is deeply tied to the craft and tradition of painting, but not in a sentimental sense that looks to the past, instead he look's toward an unknown future and all of the uncertainty and surprise it may have in store.
Adrian Hobbstook part in ‘LUCKY CHARM’ a Group Exhibition of 28 International Artists. Presented by Lisa Boudet in association with Moosey Art. Opening the 4th of November 2021 at Hoxton Arches in London, United Kingdom.
