JASON POIRIER

Jason Poirier dit Caulier is the owner and director of the Belgium based PLUS-ONE Gallery.

PLUS-ONE Gallery is a contemporary art gallery that represents and exhibits Belgian and international artists. Together with the artist, strategies are defined to bring the body of work to a new level. The gallery aims to build long-term relations with artists, collectors, institutes and other galleries. Moving away from a conventional competition-minded gallery model and creating collaborations with the focus on shared opportunities and networks.

PLUS-ONE Gallery was founded in 2016 by Jason Poirier dit Caulier. The name '+1' stands for 'more': the gallery strives for more openness concerning collaboration, more transparency, more Antwerp, more adventure and long-term thinking. They have exhibited artists such as Barbara Kruger, Andy Warhol but also emerging artists such as Charlie Roberts, Charline Tyberghein, Cleon Peterson, Erik Parker & Jean Jullien.

In October of 2020, Poirer teamed up with CASE STUDYO and relaunched its gallery season with ‘EXTRA TIME, a group exhibition with a strong focus on sports. I spoke with Poirer about what made this exhibition so significant given the current state of the world at the time.

This international group show looks from various angles at the different roles of sport in our society with its visual language of colors and formations. This group exhibition displays the balanced game between watching and being watched, the spectator culture vs the achievement-oriented society. The distinction between the objective measurable and the subjective quality of the human ability. ‘EXTRA TIME’ creates a universal playground, but foremost it’s a way to reinvent the game.

This exhibition star studded line up includes:

Joakim Ojanen, Jean Jullien, Charline Tyberghein, Charlie Roberts, James Ulmer, Ryan Travis Christian, Mark Posey, Martín Kazanietz, Royal Jarmon, Maja Djordjevic, Hiroya Kurata and Marcus Brutus
