Swedish artist Joakim Ojanen has created an entire universe packed with a diverse army of endearingly gloomy characters. Over the past couple of years, these characters and their pet companions, sculpted in ceramic and painted in oils, quietly enjoy a pensive emotions while keeping their native cool. Ojanen explores the question of what it actually means to be human in our time.

 

I sat down with Ojanen at his first solo exhibition in Paris at Gallery Ruttkowski 68. We discussed the emotions behind his sculpted characters and potential collaborations that he plans next.
